More about Scaffold Tube

Scaffold Tubes, also known as Scaffold Poles, are essential components in the construction and maintenance of large structures, providing support and access for workers. Altrad Generation scaffold tube is available for hire and sale in 3.2mm or 4mm galvanised steel and 4mm aluminium. All three types of scaffolding pipe are manufactured to British Standards and share a standard outer diameter of 48.3mm.

Scaffold Tube Materials

Galvanised Steel: Galvanised steel scaffold tubes carry a zinc coating that prevents rust and corrosion. They are stronger than aluminium scaffold tube, making them the right choice for taller structures and heavier loading requirements.

Aluminium: Aluminium scaffold tube is lighter than galvanised steel, which makes it easier to handle and move around on site. It also has inherent corrosion resistance, so it suits lighter applications where the scaffolding will not be subjected to extreme loads.

Scaffold Tube Sizes

3.2mm Scaffold Tube: The 3.2mm wall scaffold tube conforms to BS EN10219-1:2006 Grade S355JOH and has a 48.3mm outer diameter. Available from 5ft to 21ft, it is approximately 25% stronger and lighter than the 4mm steel tube. This reduces fatigue for scaffolders handling and transporting it on site, and it places less load on the structure so your scaffolding design can be slimmer.

4.0mm Steel Scaffold Tube: The 4.0mm steel scaffold tube conforms to BS EN 39:2001 Grade S235GT and has a 48.3mm outer diameter. It is available in lengths from 5ft to 21ft and offers maximum durability and superior load bearing capacity compared to the 3.2mm tube.

4.0mm Aluminium Scaffold Tube: The 4.0mm aluminium scaffold tube conforms to BS 1139-1.2:1990 and has the same 48.3mm outer diameter. Available in lengths from 5ft to 20ft, it is the lightweight option for projects where ease of handling matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What diameter is a UK scaffold tube?
A. The standard outer diameter for scaffold tube in the UK is 48.3mm. This applies to all three types that Altrad Generation supplies: 4mm hot dipped galvanised steel (BS EN 39:2001), 3.2mm high yield galvanised steel (BS EN10219-1:2006 Grade S355JOH), and 4mm aluminium scaffold tube (BS 1139-1.2:1990). Wall thickness varies between 3.2mm and 4mm, but the 48.3mm outer diameter is consistent across all types.

Q. What are scaffolding tubes called?
A. Scaffolding tubes are also known as scaffold poles or scaffolding pipe. All three terms are used interchangeably across the construction industry. Altrad Generation supplies scaffold tube and scaffold poles for hire and sale across the UK.
