Altrad Generation Supplies Uni-Roof For Bro Cerwyn Centre

In January 2026, Altrad Generation Cardiff and Trust Scaffolding were instrumental in the refurbishment of the Bro Cerwyn Centre flat roof. Utilising the innovative Uni-Roof Temporary Roof System, our Cardiff team designed and supplied a 26m x 40m temporary roof, equivalent to the size of 3 tennis courts, to protect the roof area while the essential works were carried out. The scaffold was designed to incorporate suitable access, Edge Protection, and structural support in accordance with current safety standards, ensuring the refurbishment works could be completed safely, efficiently, and without risk of weather related damage to the building’s interior.

Alongside the Uni-Roof Temporary Roof System, the complete solution included 60,000 Scaffold Fittings, 296x 1330mm and 780mm Beams, and the Trax UB Runway System, which provided a weatherproof environment to ensure a quality installation, protected exposed roof areas and internal spaces from water ingress, and safeguarded the numerous skylight openings during removal and replacement, preventing weather related project delays.

Challenges

One of the main challenges during the project was accommodating the 70,000 litres of water required for the kentledge system, which needed to be stored across 70 Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs). Finding sufficient space on site to position these units proved difficult during the initial planning stages. After reviewing the site layout and logistics, the team developed a revised arrangement that allowed the containers to be safely accommodated within the available space. While the solution successfully resolved the issue, it resulted in additional project costs of approximately £3,500.

Structural load management was another key consideration. The design incorporated 1300mm Beams to ensure loads were redistributed away from the existing roof structure. This approach protected the structural integrity of the building and ensured compliance with load bearing requirements.

The installation of the roof covering also required careful planning to maintain programme efficiency. The secondary roof structure was constructed using CI sheeting, and a roll-out installation method was adopted. This approach allowed sections of the roof to be installed quickly and safely, significantly reducing the time required for erection while improving overall productivity on site.

Outcome

Despite the complex logistical challenges, the Altrad Generation Cardiff team provided a seamless service and the client, Trust Scaffolding, were extremely happy with the project from start to finish. From the initial design phase through to the efficient supply of equipment and on-site support, the project ran smoothly and was completed successfully.

As a result of this positive experience, the client will be continuing to use the Trax UB System and Uni-Roof Temporary Roof System for future works, highlighting the value of the reliable and efficient approach delivered by Altrad Generation.
