BV100 Standard Drag Box

Drag Boxes are a speedy alternative to Trench Boxes, where speed of production is paramount. The Drag Box is used in stable, self supporting soil conditions, and is lowered into a pre-dug trench. Then, with the aid of an excavator, it is dragged along via the front strut as pipe production moves along the trench. In order to enable this, a Drag Box has a cutting edge on the front of the box rather than at the bottom. Drag Boxes also tend to be used on green or brown field sites, where there are no services or obstructions. Drag Boxes should only be used as a shield not as a support.

The BV100 Standard Drag Box from Altrad Generation is a fast, efficient shielding solution for pipe laying operations in stable, self-supporting soil conditions. Where speed of production is the priority, drag box hire offers a practical alternative to full trench box setups, reducing the time and effort required to progress along a trench run.

The BV100 drag box is lowered into a pre-dug trench and then pulled along with an excavator via the front strut as pipe production moves forward. This trench drag box for pipe laying features a cutting edge on the front of the box rather than at the bottom, enabling forward movement through the soil. Drag boxes are best suited to green or brownfield sites with no services or obstructions, and must be used as a shield only, not as a support structure.

The BV100 design withstands up to 25kN/m2, with lifting points for safe slinging and four strut positions for structural security. Edge protection systems and ladder access systems are available as accessories, and the BV100 drag box works in conjunction with manhole boxes on combined installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a drag box used for?
A: A drag box provides a shielded working area for operatives laying pipes in stable, self-supporting soil. Unlike a trench box, the drag box is pulled along the trench by an excavator as each section of pipe is laid, making it ideal for long, unobstructed pipe runs where speed is the main priority.

Q: How is the BV100 drag box installed?
A: The box is lowered into a pre-excavated trench by an excavator. As each section of pipe laying is completed, the excavator pulls the drag box forward along the trench using the front strut. The front cutting edge allows the box to move through the soil without requiring a separate excavation step.

Q: Is the BV100 drag box suitable for all soil types?
A: No. Drag boxes are designed for use in stable, self-supporting soil conditions only. They are best suited to green or brownfield sites free from cross-services or obstructions. A temporary works assessment is required before use.

Q: What is the difference between a drag box and a trench box?
A: A trench box provides two-sided ground support and stays static while work progresses. A drag box acts as a shield in stable ground and moves forward along the trench as pipe laying advances, prioritising speed of production over continuous ground support.

Q: Are BV100 drag boxes available for hire?
A: Yes. The BV100 Standard Drag Box is available for hire and sale from Altrad Generation branches across the UK and Ireland. Contact your nearest branch for availability and pricing.
